This was a fringing reef which sloped to 40m and consisted of wide sandy channels which became patchy in areas. The bottom composition was made up of sand and rubble and the slope was made up of hard substrate. Overall the reef was not in good health as there was a lot of bleaching particularly in Acropora and Stylophora and in some areas there was no live coral.

There was however a healthy fish population with lots of small reef fish, schools of fusiliers, rainbow runners and bumphead parrotfish. Also some barracuda, batfish, 3 small white tip reef sharks, several lionfish, a crocodile fish, several large blue fin jacks and 1 enormous giant trevally who was very curious and came right up to the divers and followed them for most of the dive. In total 2 turtles were seen, one of which was a Hawksbill. On all the dives a current was present which had weakened by the afternoon.

Jari Dive Log

February 2006

Date: February 12th TI: 1300 TO: 1345 Max Depth: 34m
Divers: Eibes, Carol, Kitty, Rebecca
Date: February 12th TI: 1420 TO: 1510 Max Depth: 35m
Divers: Michel, Orla, Becky, Starlight, Sharman

We stopped at Jari for an afternoon's diving on the way back to Gizo from Ranongga. This particular dive site was a reef wall which sloped to 40m where the bottom composition was sand. The wall was covered with live coral and bommies. There was evidence of a lot of bleaching, including 4 bleached anemones. There was also a beautiful blue table Acropora field, and one section of wall where there was a Turbinaria garden approx 25m across. On our particular dives we saw rainbow runners, 2 large marble groupers, barracuda, triggerfish and lots of jacks gathered at one point.

Wagina and Arnavon Island Dive Log

February 2006

Date: February 17th TI: 0930 TO: 1015 Max Depth: 11m
Divers: Michel, Kitty, Katie

This reef was made up of sand, rock, rubble and coral. There was approximately 30% hard coral cover. There was  bleaching and  algae overgrowth which affected the majority of Acropora, Porites, Pachyseris, Pavona and Fungia. In the 5m shallows there was more live hard coral than deeper. The dive began in a 3-4 knot current. There was less live coral in the high current than in the shallows closer to the island.

Date: February 19th TI: 0725 TO: 0810 Max Depth: 30m
Divers: Eibes, Carol, Katie, Sharman, Starrlight
Date: February 20th TI: 0820 TO: 0900 Max Depth: 25m
Divers: Eibes, Sylvie, Orla, Sharman, Starrlight
Date: February 20th TI: 0930 TO: 1020 Max Depth: 25m
Divers: Michel, Orla, Sylvie, Paul, Katie

The reef consisted of a lot of rubble and diverse coral, with some healthy areas of specifically Acropora but overall the reef was in poor health. There was bleaching and a lot of algae overgrowth, particularly Caulerpa and filamentous algae.

Marine life was very diverse with 3 sea turtles, one of which was a large male green turtle, an Indo Pacific lemon shark, a grey reef shark, trevally, humphead parrotfish, large school of rainbow runners, unicornfish, a wahoo, many large and moderate sized groupers, many large Napoleon wasses, 2 giant lobsters, a bluespotted ribbontail ray and a giant reef ray. Invertebrates to note included 5 sea cucumbers and 1 giant clam. Visibility was on average 30m and a slight current was experienced on most dives. The water temperature averaged 29°C.
