It's terrific that you're considering sponsoring Race for the Reefs, the principal
fund-raiser for the
important work of PCRF, the Planetary Coral Reef Foundation. The reason I'm involved is
simple: ours is an ocean planet and the seas' most biodiverse and precious resource -
coral reefs - are dying.
Coral reefs serve as the lungs of the oceans, as well as barometers for their health and,
by extension, the health of our entire planet. For reasons no one fully understands, the
seas are no longer able to sustain them. In fact, there has never even been a
comprehensive baseline map of our living coral reefs. PCRF is working to correct this
oversight and is pioneering new technologies, including the
first-ever Coral Reef Satellite Mission. The ongoing PCRF Save the Coral Reefs Expedition
aboard
the RV Heraclitus is dedicated to preserving, protecting and restoring corals reefs around
the world.
A year and a half ago, I called some friends and asked them to lend me their names and
support for the first-ever PCRF event. All of the Bills were there - Bill Paxton, Billy
Zane and Billy Campbell, along with Frances Fisher, Tom Arnold, Dark Angel's Jessica Alba
& Michael Weatherly, Maria Shriver, Dennis Weaver, KTLA's Gayle Anderson, and so many
more. Their response overwhelmed me.
They understood that I wouldn't ask if it wasn't vitally important. More than that, they
were as alarmed as I am by the coral reef crisis and were eager to do what they could to
help. I invite you to do the same. Not only will we have a great time, we'll literally be
helping to save the world. It doesn't get much better than that.
